History
IDL Motorsport was formed in 2004 and ventured into the unknown with what would be a three year attack on the Ginetta Junior Championship, a race series designed for young teenagers aged between 14 and 17 years. In its first year the championship saw grids of up to nine cars, more than any other junior series of that time. With a best qualifying result of fifth and best race result of fourth, this gave the team a good starting point to build upon.
2005 saw the team’s first win and podium finish towards the end of the season and an overall forth and sixth place in the drivers championship respectively. The team also had several other successes throughout the year such as locking out the front row at the first two rounds of the championship at Pembrey. After another successful season racing the decision was made to continue with the Ginetta Junior championship in the year to follow.
During the winter season the car of Henry Surtees (son of formula 1 world champion John) was purchased for the 2007 racing season as a replacement for Tom Sharps current race car. A further addition to the team was a new driver Nick Ponting, who in his second outing for the team took his first podium position. The 2007 Spring cup saw strong outings for both the number 7 and 10 cars with both of them bring home silverware and with the number 10 car fi nishing in the runner up position. The number 10 car then went onto finish the main championship in 3rd place with Nick Ponting finishing in fifth place overall in the drivers standings.
The all new Ginetta G50 GT car was launched in January 2008 and was unveiled at the Autosport International. This looked to be the next best stepping stone to reaching Team IDLs long term goal of competing at the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race. For the first three rounds of the season IDL prepared the celebrity car of former British Touring Car race winner and British GT star Paul O’Neill who brought the team consistent podium finishes and point scores. With a hard fought fight in the driver’s championship, IDL regular Tom Sharp was beaten by Tom Dustan to fifth place in the drivers championship after heading into the last round being separated by only 1 point. At the end of season Ginetta G50 Winter series kicked off at Snetterton in Norfolk, with Carl Breeze stepping into the number 2 car for both weekends. Race No 2 saw Tom sharp take his maiden victory in trick wet and drying conditions. Rockingham Motor Speedway was to host the final races of the winter series which saw a front row lock-out by the two IDL motorsport cars. Carl Breeze headed the field in the early stages of the race until contact span him out of the lead which gave the lead to Mike Simpson ran wide promoting Tom Sharp to the top step of the podium. Going into the last race of the day the no 10 car of Tom Sharp was only trailing that of Christian Dick by a handful of points. Carl breeze won the race and a third place finish was all that was required to seal the Winter Series Championship for the IDL squad after contact put rival Christian dick out of the race. |
