It was a day of mixed results for Camberley’s Tom Sharp this weekend at Silverstone in the Ginetta G50 Cup. With mixed conditions throughout the weekend, it made for some action packed motorsport.
A strong performance from Sharp in Saturdays qualifying saw him start in sixth position, putting the team in contention for the weekend’s events.
Race one of the weekend and a good start saw Sharp move up into fifth position, just behind the car of Ex Touring Car driver Carl Breeze. A close battle from start to finish saw Breeze come out on top, but only by 0.137 of a second.
Race two didn’t go Sharps way. Contact exiting copse and further contact through Beckets saw Sharp being spun out of 5th and to the back of the grid with substantial damage. From 20th position, a determined Sharp made his way through the field to finish 8th.
The final race of the day and with changeable conditions tyre choice was critical. With the majority of the field starting on the slick racing tyre, several drivers, inc Sharp opted the wet option. However, on the formation lap Sharp pitted at the last minute to change tyres before the start of the race, having found the conditions change. Sharp now having to start from the back of the grid, quickly made up positions and carved past those who stayed on the wet tyres, including championship rival Fulvio Mussi. A finishing position of 6th moves Sharp up into 5th in the championship points standings.
Next race will be held at Rockingham 19-20th September.
